FATHER POTHIN’S REFLECTION: St. Michael the Archangel: Battle Ready

Why is Michael our patron saint?

Of the many angels spoken of in the Bible, only four are called by name: Gabriel, Uriel, Raphael, and Michael. The archangel Michael is the most venerated of all the angels. He is the powerful agent of God who wards off evil from God’s people and delivers peace to them at the end of this life’s mortal struggle. St. Michael is BATTLE READY.  He is the prince of the Heavenly Host. In the book of Revelation, St. John recounts the great battle in Heaven when all of the wicked angels revolt against God. St. Michael leads the attack with all of the faithful angels and drives the wicked angels out.

We constantly must seek to drive out all the evil and darkness in our souls. We cannot let light in where darkness still exists, we must make room for the LIGHT. For this reason, St. Michael is the patron of those who are BATTLE READY. All souls must realize the need to ask for his intercession and be Aware, Prepared and Engaged in the spiritual fight.

St. Michael has four main responsibilities or offices, as we know from scripture and Christian tradition.

  • The first is to combat Satan.
  • The second is to escort the faithful to heaven at their hour of death.
  • The third is to be a champion of all Christians, and the Church itself.
  • And the fourth is to call men from life on Earth to their heavenly judgment.

Prayer to St. Michael

Holy Michael Archangel, defend us in the day of battle, be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust down to hell Satan and all wicked spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls.
