Mother’s Day
Father Pothin's Reflection for May 14, 2017
Let’s take a moment, as our nation celebrates Mother’s Day, to reflect on the spiritual meaning and mission of motherhood. By mother in this reflection, I refer to every person who has assumed a mothering figure in our life: Our biological mother, stepmother, adoptive mother, spiritual mother, godmother, etc.
Human life passes through various stages of transition, often difficult and demanding, which require mandatory choices, sacrifices. The Mother of Jesus was placed by the Lord at the decisive moment of salvation history and has always been able to respond with full availability, the result of a deep relationship with God developed in assiduous and intense prayer. In the same manner, God has placed a mother at the decisive moment on each of our entry into this world, and our mothers have been able to respond with love and sacrifice to God‘s invitation in the salvation of our world.
For us, today is an opportunity to appreciate the gift of our moms’ love ever more — in the gifts they gave their children, the people they put in our life, and the love that lives on within us and our family. Somehow mother’s touch is still very much in our lives, and we marvel more than ever at motherhood.
