WHY DO WE ELECT A BISHOP?
In the Anglican Catholic Church, bishops have many roles, including teaching, governing, and sanctifying:
» Teaching
Bishops are the primary teachers in their diocese, preaching the Gospel and ensuring that others teach the truth.
» Governing
Bishops oversee the administrative and ministerial life of their diocese, which includes parishes. They meet the needs of the community, including spiritual, social, personal, and material needs. They also ensure that church laws (canons and constitution) are observed, especially those related to worship and sacraments.
» Sanctifying
Bishops sanctify the actions of priests and others who administer sacraments in their diocese. They are also the principal celebrant of sacraments, especially the Eucharist.
» Other roles
Bishops also ordain priests and confirm and receive new members, into the Church. They ensure that Mass is celebrated on Sundays and holy days and may also launch new priests in charge in parishes or lead special celebrations.
As we hold our diocesan/electoral synod this week, let us pray the Holy Spirit to teach, govern and sanctify all the delegates. May God help us elect a godly priest who loves the church deeply, a man who seeks mercy and grace on a daily basis.
